Greifswald Model United Nations e.V. ist ein gemeinnütziger, universitätsnaher Verein Greifswalder Studenten, der sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat das Verständnis der Arbeit der Vereinten Nationen und das Interesse an internationalen Beziehungen zu fördern. Jedes Jahr fährt eine Delegation Greifswalder Studenten zur NMUN-Simulation nach New York City. Die Studenten des Vorjahres übernehmen ehrenamtlich die Ausbildung des aktuellen Jahrganges.

Greifswalder Studenten verhandeln in New York

Eine Woche lang Kapuzenpulli und Jeans gegen Anzug und Krawatte tauschen, die Bummelmeile in der Langen Straße gegen den Times Square und den Audimax gegen den Plenarsaal der
UN-Generalversammlung. Diese einmalige Gelegenheit bot sich kürzlich 22 Greifswalder Studenten.

Mit der Delegation des studentischen Vereins GreiMUN e.V. nahmen sie an der National Model UN in New York teil – einer internationalen Konferenz, die in verschiedenen Gremien die Arbeit der Vereinten Nationen simuliert. Das diesjährige Motto: Change your World.
Und die Veränderung begann bereits im Wintersemester 2012/2013 mit der Teilnahme am GreiMUN-Seminar. Jeden Dienstagabend trafen sich interessierte Studenten verschiedener Fachrichtungen, um mehr über die Aufgaben und Abläufe innerhalb der Vereinten Nationen zu erfahren. In zwei lokalen Simulationen lernten sie, die Position eines Mitgliedsstaats als deren Delegierter zu vertreten – Themen waren beispielsweise Organisiertes Verbrechen, Entwicklungshilfe oder internationale Klimapolitik, wie bei der Climate Change Conference 2012. Die Ausbildung erfolgte wie in den vergangenen Jahren vor allem durch ehemalige Seminarteilnehmer und Vereinsmitglieder, sowie den Lehrbeauftragten für internationale Politik, Tim Dertwinkel.

Am Ende des Jahres wurde schließlich bekanntgegeben, welche Teilnehmer mit zur NMUN nach New York fahren würden. Nachdem 2012 die brasilianische Flagge die Visitenkarten der Delegierten verzierte, durften sie dieses Mal die Republik Nigeria repräsentieren. Und es gab es eine weitere Überraschung: Die Greifswalder Delegation bekam zusätzlich zwei Sitze im Sicherheitsrat zugeteilt – als Vertreter der USA! Zur Vorbereitung auf ihre Rollen besuchten die Teilnehmer das Auswärtige Amt sowie die Nigerianische Botschaft in Berlin und nahmen an einem zweitägigen Verhandlungs-Workshop teil. In New York angekommen, wurde mit einer geführten Tour durch das UN-Hauptgebäude noch einmal das Allgemeinwissen rund um die Aufgaben und Möglichkeiten, Zusammensetzung und Aktivität der Vereinten Nationen aufgefrischt. Und dann begann mit der feierlichen Eröffnung am 17. März im New York City Sheraton Hotel nahe des Times Square die NY NMUN 2013.

22 Greifswalder Studenten, einschließlich der beiden Head Delegates Laura Hassinger und Marthe Schenk, diskutierten in zwölf verschiedenen Komitees über globale Themen wie Abrüstung, Infrastruktur und Trinkwasserversorgung in Entwicklungsländern sowie die Situation in den besetzten palästinensischen Gebieten. Ergänzt wurde das Programm durch hochkarätig besetzte Vorträge über Gleichberechtigung, Klimaproblematik, die Rolle der Medien in internationalen Konflikten etc.

Den Höhepunkt der Konferenz bildete die feierliche Schlusssitzung im Plenarsaal der Generalversammlung im UN-Hauptgebäude, wo die Teilnehmer auf den Sitzen der „echten Diplomaten“ Platz nehmen durften, um den Rednern auf dem Podium zu lauschen. Diese machten deutlich, wie wichtig es ist, die eigene Zukunft mitzugestalten durch aktive Beteiligung am internationalen Geschehen.
Vielleicht haben einige der diesjährigen GreiMUN-Delegierten Lust bekommen, selbst an der Ausbildung der nächsten Generation mitzuwirken. Vielleicht fahren sie zu anderen MUNs oder helfen als Freiwillige bei der nächsten NMUN in New York. Und vielleicht sehen wir auf diesen Bildern auch schon die neuen Diplomaten der Vereinten Nationen vor uns – wir sind gespannt.

An dieser Stelle möchten wir uns zudem bei der Universität Greifswald für die Unterstützung bedanken. Ganz besonders erfreut uns die Anerkennung des Rekorates in Verbindung mit der Sparkasse Vorpommern, deren finanzielle Hilfe diesen einzigartigen kulturellen Austausch erst ermöglichen.

GreiMUN-Local 2012: Es geht in die erste Runde

Am kommenden Wochenende (24./25.11.12) findet die diesjährige GreiMUN-Local Konferenz in Greifswald statt. Junge und alte GreiMUNler holen ihre Anzüge aus dem Schrank und arbeiten länderspezifische Positionen heraus, um gemeinsam über die zwei Agendathemen Organisiertes Verbrechen und Entwicklungshilfe zu debattieren.

Eingeleitet wird das Wochenende mit einem gemütlichen “Meet & Greet”-Abend im Stahlwerk am Freitag, dem 23.11. ab 20 Uhr.
Die Konferenz wird im Seminarraum 1 der Alten Augenklinik (Rubenowstraße 2) stattfinden. Beginn ist jeweils um Punkt 9 Uhr, Ende voraussichtlich gegen 22 Uhr (Opening und  Closing Ceremony eingeschlossen). Für Getränke und Snacks ist gesorgt, dafür werden die Konferenzteilnehmer gebeten, am Samstag einen Unkostenbeitrag von 5 € zu entrichten.

Die Veranstaltung ist öffentlich für alle Interessierten, auch Nicht-Seminarteilnehmer bzw. -Vereinsmitglieder!

Saturday 25/11/12

08:40 The first delegates are entering the room. Everything is prepared for the session…

09:00 Absoulte decorum in Seminarraum 1. Everyone seems pretty excited… GreiMUN-president Léonie Busacker opens the conference and introduces toady’s agenda topics to the committee.

09:07 The dais entertains a Minute of Silent Prayer, performed by the distinguished delegate of India.

09:11 Namibia starts with the first opening speech.

09:54 After all delegation have made their speech, the committee votes upon the first suspension of the meeting. First tensions have been overcome:)

10:13 The agenda has been set as follows: Topic 1: Transnational Organized Crime, Topic 2: Review of the Implementation of the Millenium Development Goal. The UK will commence the series of speeches, Cuba and Russia are following.

10:22 The delegates are still hesistant in signing up for the speaker’s list. Léonie reminds the committee that if the list runs out we will move straight into voting procedure with nothing to be voted upon. After that, the delegates decide on a another informal caucus to organize themselves.

10:59 Still in informal session. It looks like two groups have been formed among the delegates. There is an intense discussion about common ideas and points to focus on in a working paper. Meanwhile the staff has prepared some snacks in the foyer.

11:26 Back into formal caucus, Lars introduces himself as the chairman for the next few hours. There are still some motions on the floor to change the speaker’s time.

12:45 A working paper concerning border control is being introduced through several speeches. Some countries’ delegates have formed the Group of 11, as they call themselves.

01:00 Lunch break. The committee will reconvene at 02:22 pm.

02:22 Back to formal session. The second half  of today’s conference begins with a new chair (Robert) and a suddenly well-filled speaker’s list. Du to increased note-passing Léonie now acts as a pager for the committee with is making great progress so far.

03:54 Caution! The speaker’s list almost ran out.
After another suspension busy delegates gather in their groups. The staff is correcting first working papers already.

05:09 Again another informal caucus. The committee has made great progress in working out papers upon border security, crime prevention etc. Everyone is looking forward to the drafting process. No extraordinary incidents or controversial speeches so far…

07:30 The procedure of speeches and suspensions is going on while two papers have been handed in again for correction.

Postscript: At 09:15 the Dais called it a day and entertained a motion to suspend the meeting until Sunday morning, 9 am. We are looking forward to the following day. May it be as diplomatic and productive as the previous.

Sunday 25/11/12

09:00 Marthe opens the session and introduces herself as the chairwoman. She takes the opportunity to commend the committee for the very productive work of the last day. The chair is looking ahead to the upcoming voting upon the working papers.

10:26 The debate is getting more heated. Some delegates criticize the introduced plan for border control and its impact on states’ souvereignity.

02:11 pm Lunch break is over and the committee proceeds with the speaker’s list.

04:13 From now on, the person in charge of the ticker refrains from any responsibility of the ticker.

04:18 Speaker’s time is reduced to 30 seconds. (Thank God!)

Herzlich Willkommen zum Wintersemester 2012/2013

Der Sommer neigt sich dem Ende und es wird wieder Zeit sich um die Planung des kommenden Semesters zu kümmern.

Wenn du dich schon immer für internationale Politik interessiert hast oder einfach mehr Interesse entwickeln möchtest passt das GreiMUN Seminar genau in deinen Stundenplan!

Jeden Dienstagabend um 20 Uhr werden wir dir die Abläufe der Vereinten Nationen näher bringen und dich zu in die Rolle eines Diplomaten schlüpfen lassen. Während einer simulierten Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen hast du die Chance praktische Erfahrungen zu sammeln – als Delegation des Iran oder der USA. Wer weiß, vielleicht schicken wir ja dich im nächsten März nach New York zum National Model United Nations, einer Simulation mit 3000 Studenten aus der ganzen Welt!

Interesse? Dann komm einfach bei uns vorbei oder besuche uns vorher auf einer unserer Veranstaltungen in der Ersti-Woche. Natürlich sind Studenten aller Fachrichtungen gerne gesehen. In dem Sinne:
